Shashi Tharoor Raises Alarm: Imran Khan's Health in Question (2025)

A troubling mystery deepens: Where is Imran Khan, and why has Pakistan fallen silent? As rumours swirl and anxiety grows, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has voiced concern over what he calls a “disturbing silence” from Pakistani authorities about the condition and whereabouts of the country’s former Prime Minister.

Despite rampant online speculation and repeated pleas from his family and party, the Pakistani government has yet to issue a single verified statement about Imran Khan’s health or safety. The uncertainty has only heightened fears across borders, with Tharoor cautioning that prolonged secrecy is rarely a good sign.

Mounting concern and unanswered questions

Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has been imprisoned since August 2023 after being convicted in a corruption case and sentenced to 14 years. In recent days, social media platforms have exploded with unverified claims—some alarmingly alleging that Khan may have died in custody. Such rumours have pushed his family and political allies to demand what they are calling “proof of life.”

Tharoor’s reaction: Disturbance over silence

Speaking to ANI, Tharoor said the lack of updates from Islamabad made the entire situation deeply unsettling. He was careful to frame his comments as those of a private citizen rather than an official of the Indian government, yet he didn’t hide his unease. “It’s never appropriate to interfere in another nation’s domestic affairs,” he admitted, “but the silence around this issue is worrying.” He went on to underline that the flood of conflicting reports online was fueling public anxiety rather than easing it. “The government hasn’t clarified anything,” he pointed out. “That kind of silence breeds suspicion. And that’s bad—very bad.”

The Congress MP also referenced the emotional message released by Imran Khan’s son, Kasim Khan, who publicly pleaded for confirmation that his father was still alive. “You all saw the statement. His son just wants proof that his father is alive—and apparently no one has provided it yet,” Tharoor noted, calling it a matter of basic humanity more than politics.

A crisis with humanitarian overtones

Tharoor acknowledged that Pakistan’s judicial and political systems must address their own internal matters, but he emphasized that the mystery surrounding a public figure’s fate raises broader humanitarian and moral questions. “At the end of the day, we’re talking about a human being,” he said. “Imran Khan isn’t just a politician—he’s someone millions idolized as a cricket hero. People everywhere simply want to know he’s safe.”

With a pointed reminder that justice cannot exist without transparency, Tharoor added, “You cannot imprison someone and then erase their existence. If something has gone wrong, the authorities have a duty to come clean.”

Official denials—and ongoing distrust

Pakistani officials have attempted to put rumours to rest. Rana Sanaullah, adviser to the Prime Minister on political affairs, told Dawn that Khan was “doing fine” and dismissed the speculation as baseless. However, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf countered that line, renewing its demand for face-to-face meetings with Khan after more than three weeks of being denied access by prison authorities.

Frustrated family members and PTI supporters have staged demonstrations outside Adiala Jail, demanding transparency and visitation rights. A PTI delegation was once again refused entry after visiting the prison today, intensifying the uproar.

Online, speculation continues to build. Reports suggest the 73-year-old former prime minister could soon be transferred to a higher-security facility, further limiting outside contact. Meanwhile, the hashtag “Where is Imran Khan?” continues trending on X, while the Pakistani interior ministry maintains its silence.

But here’s where it gets controversial: Is this silence a matter of national security—or a deliberate attempt to suppress information about a political prisoner? As uncertainty deepens, international observers are asking: how long can any democracy sustain credibility when transparency is replaced by silence?

What’s your view? Should the Pakistani government release verified proof of Imran Khan’s well-being—or do you think such pressure from outside voices crosses diplomatic lines? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
