Imagine a life lived in the shadows, a fugitive existence spanning over three decades. This is the reality of Ng Kwang Keng, an 80-year-old former moneylender, who recently pleaded guilty in a Singapore court after a staggering 33 years on the run. The case, which began in 1990, has finally reached a pivotal moment.
Initially facing a murder charge, Ng admitted to voluntarily causing grievous hurt with a weapon, a significant shift in the legal proceedings. The core of the issue stems from a tragic event: the fatal stabbing of a debtor, Lim Kim Leng. The debt? A sum of approximately S$22,000 (around Rs 15 lakhs).
But here's where it gets controversial... The details paint a grim picture. On November 6, 1990, Ng, along with two others, confronted Lim at his residence over the unpaid debt. A physical altercation ensued, culminating in Ng stabbing Lim in the upper thigh. Lim, only 27 years old, succumbed to his injuries a month later, on December 8, after suffering from multiple health complications.
Following the stabbing, Ng, then 45, fled Singapore with the assistance of his family, disappearing into Malaysia. He managed to evade capture for 32 years, living a life of anonymity until April 2022, when he was detained in Johor Bahru under Malaysia’s Immigration Act. He was subsequently deported back to Singapore in December 2023, where he was immediately taken into custody.
The prosecution is now seeking a jail term of between six-and-a-half to eight years for Ng. Deputy Public Prosecutor Terence Chua highlighted that Ng's return was not voluntary, but due to his detention in Malaysia. Ng's defense is pleading for leniency, citing his genuine remorse, his advanced age, and multiple medical conditions, arguing that a lengthy sentence could be detrimental to his health. His lawyers also emphasized his family's desire to spend more time with him.
And this is the part most people miss... Ng faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment or a jail term of up to 10 years. The final sentencing is scheduled for December 30.
