Daisy Ridley wows in plunging black PVC dress (2024)

Daisy Ridley made sure to pose up a storm as she attended theYoung Woman and the Sea film screening in London on Wednesday evening.

The actress, 32, wowed in a quirky black PVC midi dress which featured a daring plunging neckline.

Complete with puffed shoulder pads, Daisy cinched in her waist with a matching black leather belt and accessorised the look with some cream leather heels.

The star, who plays legendary swimmer Gertrude 'Trudy' Ederle in the film, beamed in snaps as she gelled her hair back across her head and tucked the brunette locks behind her ears.

Young Woman And The Sea is based on Glenn Stout's book of the same name, which was originally published in 2009.

The movie is centred on the life of Gertrude Ederle, an Olympic gold medallist who became the first woman to swim across the English Channel in 1926.

In addition to Daisy, the film also stars Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Stephen Graham and Christopher Eccleston.

Daisy recently recalled a 'trippy' encounter she had with the legendary long-distance swimmer Diana Nyad at the recent Hollywood premiere of the film.

'It was so surreal. I was washing my hands in the bathroom, waiting for my people, and she came in,' the Star Wars alum told THR on Tuesday.

'It was the most surreal thing. I kept going, "This is so trippy, this is so trippy. You are real. You did the thing, and I just played the person that did the thing."

'But she was very encouraging because she could see that I had trained really hard. And that's wonderful [to hear], particularly from the sports people that were there last night.

'I really wanted to do justice by swimmers, and in a physical way, I wanted to try and do as much as I could to look able and to sell the story. So getting a pat on the back from Diana Nyad was pretty cool.'

The feeling was mutual for the motivational speaker 74, who wrote on Instagram on May 17 that Daisy was 'captivating' in her performance as the first woman to ever swim the English Channel.

It's been a year since Diana's own 110-mile journey across the Florida Straits, at age 64, in 2013 was depicted in the critically-acclaimed Netflix biopic Nyad starring Annette Bening.

Daisy was trained by an Olympic silver medallist named Siobhan-Marie O'Connor to more authentically portray Trudy Ederle in Joachim Rønning's biopic, which hits limited UK/US theatres this Friday.

Speaking about filming, Daisy explained: 'We did a day of underwater work in a tank. We had done all of the open water stuff in the Black Sea at nighttime, which obviously had to be more controlled because it was more dangerous.

'But then we did a day of underwater work, and it was more comfortable to stay in the pool. So I had my little floating [lunch] tray, and I ate my lunch. It was enjoyable.

'But it's that funny thing where you don’t want to eat too much. You're starving because you've done so much work, but you don't want to eat too much in case you vom, basically.'

Development on the movie began in 2015, when Bruckheimer obtained the rights to Stout's novel.

Although Lily James was initially set to portray Ederle, she departed the project and Daisy joined the film's cast in 2020.

Production on Young Woman And The Sea commenced in May of 2022 and concluded the following month.

The Ophelia star spoke about working on the feature during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter and stated that her previous action-film training did not necessarily prepare her for extensive periods of swimming.

'I feel like, generally, the stuff I learned for Star Wars is transferable...but swimming is just a different thing, so it felt like really starting at the beginning,' she said.

Daisy also admitted that, while she was proud of her work in the film, she was not planning on taking part in any swimming competitions anytime soon.

'I'm so thrilled to play Trudy, what she did is amazing, and I don't need to swim anymore. I'll watch people swim and cheer them on, can't wait for the Olympics,' she said.
