Get ready for a mind-boggling journey into the world of ancient giants! Anacondas, those iconic tropical snakes, have been reigning supreme for a staggering 12 million years, a recent study reveals. But here's where it gets controversial... these beasts haven't changed a bit!
Imagine unearthing fossils in South America, specifically in the Amazonian region, and discovering that anacondas reached their peak size 12.4 million years ago. These snakes, among the largest on the planet, can stretch up to 30 feet and weigh a whopping 550 pounds. Most adults, however, are a more manageable 16 feet long.
The University of Cambridge-led research team delved into the 'Middle to Upper Miocene' period, a time when global temperatures were warmer, wetlands were vast, and food was abundant. Many animal species from this era, including a 12-meter caiman and a 3.2-meter turtle, have since vanished. Yet, anacondas, true survivors, have defied the odds and maintained their colossal size.
Researchers measured an impressive 183 fossilized anaconda backbones, representing at least 32 snakes, found in Venezuela. By combining these measurements with data from other South American sites, they concluded that ancient anacondas were around four to five meters long, matching their modern counterparts.
Lead author Andrés Alfonso-Rojas remarked, "Other species like giant crocodiles and turtles have gone extinct due to cooling temperatures and habitat loss, but anacondas are super-resilient. They evolved to be large shortly after appearing in South America and have maintained that size."
Alfonso-Rojas's findings, published in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, showed that anacondas have consistently been four to five meters long since their Miocene debut. Today, they inhabit swamps, marshes, and the mighty Amazon River.
The researchers believe that northern South America during the Miocene resembled the modern Amazon region, providing an ideal habitat for anacondas. While their range has shrunk, modern anacondas still have access to the right food sources, like capybaras and fish, to sustain their massive size.
Interestingly, it was previously assumed that anacondas must have been even larger in the past due to their sensitivity to temperature. However, Alfonso-Rojas, a doctoral student at Cambridge's zoology department, stated, "We expected ancient anacondas to be seven or eight meters long, but we found no evidence of such a giant snake from the warmer Miocene period."
The fossils used in this study were collected over multiple seasons by researchers from the University of Zurich in Switzerland and the Museo Paleontológico de Urumaco in Venezuela.
